The Snack Who Knocks?
PopCorners x Breaking Bad
“Say my name.”
“You’re PopCorners.”
“You’re goddamn right.”
Last year, I finally binge-watched Breaking Bad. I may have been a decade late, but I finally made it. By the end, I couldn’t get enough of the iconic show… but now we’re getting a little more. No, sadly Vince Gilligan isn’t releasing another season or even another episode. Instead, enter PopCorners and its upcoming Super Bowl spot, “Break into Something Good.” By the way, Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
In perhaps my most anticipated Super Bowl ad, PopCorners is reuniting the titular Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and his cooking counterpart, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). Teased heavily across social media, the commercial also features drug kingpin Tuco Salamanca (Raymond Cruz). Instead of cooking their notorious crystal meth, Walt and Jesse are shown making seven flavors of PopCorners, a “popped-corn snack.” PopCorners even brought back Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan to help direct the advertisement.
While it may only be for a TV spot, I’m excited to see two of my favorite fictional characters back on screen together. I hope the success of this ad encourages agencies to push the envelope; incorporating popular culture in ads may be expensive, but it makes advertising fun.
As usual, this is merely one of the dozens of highly anticipated Super Bowl ads. For now, I’ll let you return to your Super Bowl festivities. My next blog will dive into my favorite Super Bowl ads following Sunday’s showdown.
